When celebrating big wins can turn into criminal charges

by | Jan 3, 2017 | Criminal Defense

Every year, there are news reports across the country of overzealous college students taking to the streets to celebrate a big win by their school in football or basketball. It was no different recently at Penn State, when the Nittany Lions won the Big 10 football championship game.

While campus police are usually content to let students get a little rowdy on certain occasions, they do not hesitate to make arrests when people are hurt or property is damaged. While accounts state that thousands of people took to East Beaver Avenue to celebrate the Nittany Lions’ big win, State College Police arrested four that night, and they are reviewing surveillance footage to determine if anyone else broke the law that night.

Police said the arrests had to do with damage to both public and private property. Three of those arrested are Penn State Students, and they will face felony charges.

Arrests Like These Can Derail Your Future

What probably started as a night of revelry has ended in a night that three students would probably like to forget. That is because felony charges can have long-lasting effects on these students’ futures. A conviction could mean jail, fines, community service and probation. An arrest could also lead to serious on-campus penalties, including expulsion from school.

It is important to keep the following advice in mind when celebrating a big win.

  • Disperse when police say to disperse
  • Exercise good judgment when drinking
  • Don’t climb on buildings or street lights
  • Remember that you have rights if you are arrested

Remember, every arrest is serious. If you are arrested either on- or off-campus, it is important to talk to an attorney as soon as possible. A skilled criminal defense attorney may be able to help you find an outcome that allows you to stay in school and protects your future.
